Across the nation, states and communities have recognized this shortcoming and have advocated for the creation of land banks as a viable alternative or addition to the county auction of real property. And land banks are proving to be successful tools in combating community blight.

By the end of this year, the Chautauqua County Land Bank Corporation, in conjunction with county and municipal partners, will have demolished more than 100 condemned houses since its inception in 2012.

The Chautauqua County Land Bank is a nonprofit corporation, operating under New York state authority, to assist communities to address the issues of blight caused by vacant, abandoned, condemned, and foreclosed properties.

The organization created to assist in solidifying the county’s housing stock is searching for a home of their own.

A new, more user-friendly website is now available for the Chautauqua County Land Bank Corporation.

On Wednesday, the land bank held their annual meeting to elect new officers and make appointments to their standing committees.

At a recent meeting, the land bank’s board of directors discussed the buying and selling side of its operations.

The cities of Dunkirk and Jamestown have benefited greatly from the Chautauqua County Land Bank’s programs to eliminate blight properties.

The house at 31 N. Pangolin St. in the city of Dunkirk was recently demolished.

By the end of 2016, more than $2 million in state funding will have been used to demolish dozens of condemned houses in Chautauqua County.
